Exmouth Sea Angling Association contested their away cup, writes Bob Pennells.

Twelve members travelled to Charmouth for the meeting, all hopping to land a smalleyed ray or two.

Some competitors opted to fish to the left under the cliffs and others fishing from the concrete steps and the

beach to the right.

The night started very slow and never really got going, Barry Pester caught the first fish a nice little flounder. However, after measuring it and finding it was just sizable he returned it to the sea without weighing it (you can tell he fishes the Wednesday League where they don’t weigh fish!), but on his next fish he got it right to silence the laughs coming his way!

All but one angler managed to catch at least one dog fish or a pout. The Away Cup was eventually won by Brian ‘The Viking’ Reed with a mixed bag of dog, pout and rockling for a total catch of 277 per cent. He also bagged the Best Specimen award with a 2.38lb dog fish.

Second place went to Garry Currie with his total being 232 per cent and third was Mike ‘The Crab’ Richardson with 206 per cent.

Sadly the whole event failed to bag sight of a single ray!

Others to contest the Away Cup were; Si May (167), Ade Jones (154), Dave Fuller (134), Barry Pester (133), Garry Bowden (86), Mark Hewitt (71), Nick Chandler (48) and Ken Williams.
