Exe Table Tennis Club held it’s highly competitive and popular adult Easter tournament last Tuesday which saw arguably the closest competition at the club to date, writes Sam Richards..
Ever-improving and winner of the ‘most improved player of the year 2013’, Alex McConnell, was in top form looking to upset the top trio of Howard Back, Martin Atkin and Paul Humphries.
It was no surprise to see those four names reach the semi-finals where both McConnell and top-seed Back were dismissed from the competition leaving an exciting final in prospect.
The final lived up to its high expectations creating an enthralling watch for the juniors and previously fallen competitors.
It was a best of five set match which turned out to be exactly that going all the way to the wire!
Atkins just edged the first set taking it 12-10. The second set followed in a similar way giving Atkins a two set cushion, winning 11-7.
The third set took a complete turn in the opposite direction as Atkins seemed to get complacent and Humphries won 11-3 giving him a confidence boost which led to the closest set the club has seen in all its tournament history.
The fourth set reached 11-11 and just continued on with neither player being able to take the final point and end the set.
Atkins began to get frustrated while in complete contrast, Humphries remained calm and concentrated, until Atkins managed to find the composure and smashed his 23rd point of the set and win the competition 23-21.
