Devon boxing is hailing the magnificent achievement of a man who has dedicated his life to the sport, and is receiving the recognition he deserves,

Dick Kersey from Bideford ABC recently travelled to Windsor Castle to receive his MBE from the Prince of Wales, Prince William.

Kersey has been part of the North Devon club for an incredible 60 years, starting as an 11-year-old junior in the fledgling days of Bideford ABC. Kersey boxed as a schoolboy, junior and senior until the age of 32, when he swapped the gloves for a coaching role.

As a boxer, Kersey was prolific, taking part in well over 100 bouts, including famous victories over renowned fighters from Germany and Holland.

He was the perfect choice to take over the running of the club in 1984, and he has been doing it ever since, working alongside a dedicated committee, who have nurtured young talent through the generations.

As well as harnessing boxing talent, Kersey has worked extremely hard to develop the coaches, who have made a positive impact on the sport throughout the South West.

His influence is obviously greatest in Bideford but the story of Dick Kersey is an inspiration to boxing enthusiasts across Devon.
