Exeter City striker Sam Nombe has joined Championship side Rotherham for a “significant undisclosed fee”, believed to be around £1 million.

The Millers have smashed their club record fee – set earlier this summer on Christ Tiehi – to bring the 24-year-old to the New York Stadium on a four-year deal.

The move will reunite Nombe with former boss Matt Taylor, who signed him for Exeter in 2021.

Exeter manager Gary Caldwell says a replacement will be signed and the money will be spend on strenghtening and adding depth to his side.

Nombe has not scored in six appearances this season but notched 17 goals in 47 games for the Grecians last term.

Nombe could go into the Millers squad to face Norwich on Saturday.

Taylor told www.themillers.co.uk: “We’re pleased to welcome him to the football club.

He’ll improve our attacking options and I’m looking forward to working with Sam again.

“He has pace and power, he’s a ‘Rotherham United’ player who has scored goals consistently over the last few seasons.

“We could have loaned a player from a Premier League club, but we want to progress and I see Sam as a good investment, not just for now but for the coming seasons as well.

“He’s a good character and he’ll take on the challenge, which is what I stand for and the club stands for. He’s a certain type of profile and one we’ve been looking for.”

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell said: “Sam joined as the club’s record signing in 2021 and has made a massive contribution to the club in his time here.

“It is in the best interest of the club that he moves for a substantial fee now, with less than a year left on his contract.

“There will be a replacement coming, but more importantly the transfer allows us to strengthen the squad overall and provide us with more depth.

“There has been a large turnover of players this summer, which we knew was coming, but no individual player is bigger than our special football club.

“We have to keep building a strong connection between the supporters and this new group of players to make new heroes and create even more amazing moments throughout the season, with the attacking style of football we are looking to play.”
