Exmouth Basketball Club took a team across to Dorset to play a summer exhibition game against Bridport Evolution, and the result was a celebration of this fast-paced sport.

Exmouth, which has three competitive teams in the Exeter and District Basketball League, has been developing connections with teams outside of the league. In this first meeting between the two teams, Exmouth came out with the win 85 to 66.

The game began with several strong opening plays for Exmouth, with Lewis Cuthbert scoring successive three-pointers to put his team ahead. With strong contributions of Benjamin Clutton and Toby Cuthbert inside, the team took an early lead.

However, it wasn’t long before Bridport rallied, keeping the score tight through a combination of outside shooting and strong rebounding for extra chances at the basket.

Exmouth’s James Edmunds led the way in the first half with some key passes inside, while George Sinclair put in some crucial long-range shots to keep Exmouth ahead.

However, it was in the third quarter that Exmouth began extending a commanding lead, running a full court defence that stunned Bridport and led to key steals from Julez Menzes and Chris Clark, allowing easy points on the fast break.

Despite a late third-quarter push by the young Bridport lads, Exmouth retained a strong lead going into the final quarter. With a few late buckets from Andy Hassan and strong rebounding from Clark Agambar, Exmouth were able to finish on top in the final quarter.

Player-Coach George Sinclair noted, “It was great to see all the lads contributing on the floor. Everyone played their part.”

Overall, the game was a competitive thrill from start to finish and an excellent way to bid farewell to centre Kris Davis, who now leaves the team to return to Australia with his family. With the summer in full flow, Exmouth Basketball Club are open to beginners and new players at the Exmouth Community College, Mondays 7:30-8:30pm and Tuesdays 7-8pm, and hope to attract fresh talent going into next season.
