There have been significant highs and lows at Madeira Bowls Club over the past couple of weeks. Members were shocked and deeply saddened to learn that their dear President, Keith Weeks, died suddenly on Sunday, March 5 whilst officiating at a County President’s Match.

In 1965, Keith was awarded the British Empire Award for gallantry while serving in the RAF. He joined Madeira Bowling Club in 1995 and has always been a great advocate of the joys of bowling.

Keith thoroughly enjoyed his year as DCIBA’s Indoor President for 2017/18 and he served as Madeira’s Men’s Indoor Captain in 2005 and again in 2009. He was a club coach for years and keenly supported all possible club activities in his role as Club President.

He supported all the DCIBA’s President Matches and tributes to him have come from all corners of the County. He will be missed by many but so very much at Madeira.

Exmouth Journal:

This weekend was a high that President Keith would have been so proud to have supported. The DCLIBA finals were held at Madeira for the first time that anyone can remember.

It was the happiest of events for those taking part and those spectating (standing room only) with some first class bowling to enjoy. Many members took part – umpiring, marking and catering - to ensure a successful weekend.

Madeira had competitors in three events although they narrowly lost in the semi-finals of the Champion of Champions, the two-wood singles, and the fours final, but congratulations to Sue Harriott, Penny Preece, Janine Orchard, Christine Macaulay and Dee Williams for going so far in these competitions.

Pauline How (Isca) won the final of the Champion of Champions against Sue Evans (Honiton). However, Sue Evans was successful in the Triples playing with Carol Binmore and Yvonne Rayner against another Honiton team and the Pairs playing again with Carol Binmore.

The County Fours winners were Sarah Quayle, Linda Sampson, Carrie Partridge, and Gill Grantham from Plymouth beat the Madeira team. Last but not least, the two wood singles final was won by Gill Grantham from Plymouty. Congratulations to them all.
