Looking back through the rich history of sport in East Devon, Heroes from the Past is a brand new monthly feature that will be dedicated to some of the great personalities from bygone sporting days.

We want your pictures, stories, memories, anything you can find that brings back wonderful days of sporting triumph, or even the darker times of sporting failure.

Our primary focus is on sport from the past 50 years, so the 1970s, 80s and 90s, but it would also be great to hear tales from further back in history, or even the early noughties. Please contact sports editor Tim Herbert on tim.herbert@newsquest.co.uk with your stories and pictures.

To get you in the mood, we found some of these wonderful images online, starting with this fabulous picture of the old pro shop at Sidmouth Golf Club.

This next image comes from a story by the fabulous Roger Mann, who sadly recently passed away. Roger was a hugely popular and charismatic figure in local sport, particularly in the South Devon area, and his Retro Sport pieces were always a great read.

This image shows the ladies of I Zingari at Exmouth in the 1890s and formed part of Roger’s captivating story of Devon cricket in the Victorian era.

Exmouth Journal:

Switching smoothly to football, Honiton Town FC have been fantastic in sending over images to the East Devon papers down the years and we found this superb image from their Facebook page, which is a team photo of the Hippos at a time when they were regularly taking on the might of Tiverton Town, and beating them.

Exmouth Journal:

Staying on the football theme, how about this marvellous picture of Seaton Town Reserves, which featured on the Beer Albion social media pages. While Seaton was in the team name, it’s a fair assumption to say a few Beer boys were also involved.

Exmouth Journal:

Our final few pictures show Budleigh Salterton FC playing in 2017, the amazing progress of women’s rugby with the Sidmouth Valkyries and Ottery St Mary cricketers in 1998.

Hopefully (forgive the pun), you get the picture. The best images and stories come from our readers, so please send them to tim.herbert@newsquest.co.uk and let’s celebrate together the superb sporting traditions of East Devon.
