Despite the final score, 41-23 to Lydney, this game was a lot closer than you would believe.

The Cockles were far too generous, with four yellow cards (one to Lydney). Three errors that led to converted tries including an interception, lost ball at kick-off and a penalty try, 21 points handed over.

The first try from hooker Jack Ballett on debut came from a series of phases after a penalty. Finn Musgrove burrowed over and Joe Harris in support of an off-load also crossed the whitewash after phase play, each with their maiden 1st Team league try. Eight points from Oli Cave on kicking duty completed the tally.

At half-time, the Cockles were ahead 13-10, despite being down to 13 men when yellow cards overlapped. Cave slotted two penalties and a conversion following Ballett’s try on forty minutes.  The forwards were solid at scrum time, prop Brad Skinner grabbed the player’s MOM.

The lineout will be in focus at training this week. The Exmouth backs went looking for opportunities, however handling was a little off kilter. Mistakes can be costly, although if the execution is on point, everything is a fraction easier.

The Severnsiders scored five tries, two for Brad Dunn, one each for Henry Sleeman and Reilly Scriven, plus a penalty try to claim the bonus point win. Sixteen points from the boot of Brad Barnes. Ultimately, they took advantage of a fractured side with two more yellow cards in the second period.

A tough afternoon with real positives in performance from the younger lads. Maximum effort from all is never in doubt.
