Autumn is the time of year when our estuaries really come into their own, the Bass are still there feeding up for the winter and the first frost often signal the arrival of the Flounders.
Saleem Ali and Daniel Patrick rose from their beds well before dawn and headed off in search of their quarry, with both anglers recording several flounders, a great reward for their efforts. On the Exe, Grant Morrish went in search of Bass and landed a fine fish of 6lbs 4oz.
A Torbay rock mark proved successful for the angling duo of Kev Madeley and Adrian Houghton, who fished with large Herring, squid wraps and Mackerel baits, with Kev landing a superb 10lbs 3oz Bullhuss amongst several Conger eels for both anglers.
John Shaw fished the Tamar for a fish of 8lbs 7oz, whilst Aaron Colhoun visited the reefs of the Bristol Channel for several fish up to about 10lbs.
The open beaches to the east of the region are producing plenty of Whiting with fish up to nearly 2lbs, along with the odd late Black Bream amongst the smaller pin Whiting and Dodfish. Larger baits will produce the odd Cod. One angler fished Slapton this week who didn’t get a bite on his bottom baits but caught a couple of tasty late Mackerel for his tea.
Lewis Hodder managed to get his boat Pegasus out for the Lyme Bay boat Trophy, a four-club competition where they fished inshore in testing conditions. The victors were the Lyme Regis SAC team of Darren Herbert and Andy Sheader with 108 points, the runners up from Beer SAC finished with 95 points.
A date for the diary is the Wyvern Open Shore Competition on Sunday 2nd January, which is fished at Slapton. The sign on is at Street Gate car park from 11am and fishing is from 1pm to 6pm. Entry fee is £9 with an optional pool of £1. The first prize is £200.
The November fish of the month will be announced next week, now is the time to get your entries in for December, prizes are kindly donated by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre.
