The women of East Devon Golf Club played for the first silverware of the year this month as they competed in the annual Spring Meeting.

Played across two weeks the meeting comprises an individual medal stroke play competition and a separate pairs foursome competition, testing different formats of the game and a terrific way to the golfing juices flowing for the summer.

In the medal competition, Helen Chivers won the Baker Cup for the best overall gross score with a gross 78 – an impressive four over par on the course and an outstanding individual display.

The nett (handicap) competition for the Burden Cup was hard fought and went down to the wire. Anne Sobczak won Division 2 with a nett 72, one shot clear of Sarah White on 73, while in Division 1, Sally Underwood recorded a tremendous three under handicap round of nett 71. However, Helen Chivers took home the trophy with the best overall nett score of the day, a five under handicap nett 69.

There was some more excellent scoring in the foursomes competition with Linda Longmuir and Lesley Wilson winning with 43 stableford points, beating Judith Parsons and Barbara Andrews on countback. It was a fittingly close finish for such an enjoyable competition.

The pairing of Barbara Mellor and Peggy Lomas were third with 42 points and will go forward to try and retain the Killard Leavy Trophy in the County competition later in the year.

The ladies also took the opportunity to raise funds for the Club’s chosen charity for the year, Exmouth based Pete’s Dragons, by holding a Spring Garden Fair. Plants large and small, along with pots and planters, seeds and books were all on sale and the ladies raised £390 for charity.

This will be added to the rest of the Club’s fundraising this year and will go to help Pete’s Dragons as they continue to supply suicide bereavement support for people and families of all ages.
