A buoyant atmosphere will add a spring to your step between the seven races that feature the Weatherbys General Stud Book Online Silver Buck Handicap Chase, a three-mile race that is sure to attract some popular stayers.
It is named after Silver Buck, whose wins at Wincanton included the Jim Ford Challenge Cup in 1981. He also won in 1982 before claiming victory in that year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup and secured the Champion National Hunt Horse of the Year title.
A year later Silver Buck, who won six times in all at Wincanton, was part of the most remarkable training feat in history when the legendary Michael Dickinson saddled the first five home in the Cheltenham Gold Cup – Silver Buck was fourth.
David Pipe, who trains on the Devon-Somerset border at Culmstock, saddled last year’s winner Daklondike who won by three and three-quarters of a length. He also spent time with Michael Dickinson in America and said: “It was great to win last year’s race as Silver Buck is a name connected with one of the greatest ever trainers Michael Dickinson with whom I was lucky enough to spend some time during the early part of my training career. He had a great work ethos, leaving no stone unturned and I learned a lot from him.
“With Daklondike winning last year, it was great to become just a tiny part of the history of a great race that remembers a great horse, and ultimately a great trainer. Hopefully, we’ll have a runner in the race next week.”
The first of seven races come under starters orders at 12.25 with the gates opening at 10.30. For more information and to buy discounted tickets in advance visit www.wincantonracecourse.co.uk
