A DETERMINED walker from Woodbury plans to walk more than 100 miles to raise money for a charity which supports parents with deaf children.

Neale Cartlidge, 36, hopes to raise 10,000 for the National Deaf Children's Society by embarking on a four-day trek from Lynmouth, North Devon, to Wembury, in the southern part of the county.

He will take part in the Two Moors Way challenge between August 14 and 17.

Neale decided to embark on the walk to support his friend whose three-year-old son was diagnosed with a moderate hearing loss.

Niki Michael, head of community events at the National Deaf Children's Society, said: "Every day in the UK three babies are born deaf and 90 per cent are born to parents with little experience of deafness.

"The NDCS is the national charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people and is funded almost entirely through public donations."

Niki said that the charity's work would not be possible without the commitment of people like Neale.

There are 35,000 deaf children in the UK. Parents with concerns about their child's hearing can contact the NDCS helpline on 0808 800 8880.
