It is unbelievable that the MP for Exmouth supports the Asda proposals despite more than 10,000 residents being against the idea. Does he really believe Asda will pay a top-flight architect who can design a building that is sympathetic to the needs of wildlife and will enhance the shoreline? Does Mr Swire visit Exmouth so infrequently that he is not aware that the estuary is four-times designated a special site in national and international law and is of international importance?Has he not read the research and evidence that large supermarkets kill local, independent trade and cause net losses of over 200 jobs in small towns like Exmouth? If not, he's not alone, neither have the members of the so-called Regeneration Board. Most agree that this site is not attractive but, with some imagination, it could really help to regenerate Exmouth and provide educational and recreational facilities that will not impair the natural surroundings to be enjoyed by residents and tourists of all ages.If East Devon District Council and Devon County Council are so strapped for cash that they insist on selling land for a fourth supermarket, they should sell Asda a site in a more appropriate location.Diane Hill,106 Ashleigh Road, Exmouth.
