EXASPERATED officers have warned Exmouth to lock its doors at night after thieves made off with bags and other items having strolled into homes through unlocked doors.

EXASPERATED officers have warned Exmouth to lock its doors at night after thieves made off with bags and other items having strolled into homes through unlocked doors.

Thefts were reported to Exmouth police on Wednesday morning (July 9) - crime victims admitting they had not locked their back doors.

Sergeant Nick Southern said: "I just can't get my head around the fact people leave their back door open or unlocked overnight - we have someone in Exmouth who is looking for these opportunities."

Police warned the public over the presence of opportunist criminals in May - as more than a dozen burglaries occurred in just two months earlier in summer.

Detective Constable Mike Chalmers warned homeowners and tenants: "The first thing is to lock doors and close gates. An open gate is an invitation for someone to walk in.
