I read with dismay that Devon County Council are to look into restricting vehicles using the Belsher's Slipway in Exmouth. I have been a boat user on this slipway for the last 30 years and have used it frequently with both a vehicle and formerly with a launching trolley pushed by hand. I have never come into conflict with any member of the public nor have ever received any complaint. True local people know this site is and has been used regularly for years. It is only people who have recently moved into this area who seem hell bent on changing things because it doesn't suit them. We have seen them complaining about noisy boats, boats moored in front of their property not looking tidy and even a lifeboat starting up in the early hours of the morning waking them up! The complaint of vehicles on the beach is not about safety it's about their view.Belsher's slipway provides the only safe low water launching site in Exmouth. Due to the geographical position of Exmouth, our high spring tides occur early in the morning and in late afternoon. The Imperial slipway is a good safe slipway but is only accessible on a spring tide during the early and late part of the day.Mamhead slipway is just downright dangerous. This has to be replaced or improved before someone loses their life. There is more risk of someone being injured or coming into conflict with the public here than on any other slipway in Exmouth. Here is where you should be looking to seek conditions being imposed for improvement for the safety of others.May I make a reasonable request to DCC and others that any decision regarding the restriction of vehicles using Belsher's Slipway in Exmouth is deferred until such time that there is a safe, totally accessible slipway put in place in Exmouth for the general public to use. I can only believe that this is fair to all.I look forward to hearing a fair and sensible decision being made for the interest of all.Giles White,Henley Road, Exmouth.
