Footage shows floodwater engulfing a road near Exmouth this morning after heavy rain caused the River Otter to 'burst its banks'.

Motorists travelling near Budleigh are being advised to take care after footage filmed this morning showed a treacherous traverse along one of Otterton’s roads.

Filmed by Gary Williams, it shows deep flood waters covering the road for a significant stretch.

As well as being completely submerged, further floodwater can be seen spilling onto the road as the vehicle makes its way around the corner.

This follows Devon Flood Alerts’ warning, on Wednesday, March 14, that heavy rain in East Devon was likely to cause the rivers Otter and Sid to rise overnight.

Emma Cooling, from Exmouth, today told the Journal: “The Otter has burst its banks at Otterton overnight, so access the village from the Budleigh direction is flooded.”

Ms Cooling reported that only 4x4s were able to get in and that Otterton Mill car park was flooded, although the water hadn’t reached the buildings.

The Journal will provide updates on the situation as and when we get them.
