Residents advised to lock doors and not allow any unexpected callers inside without official identification

Householders across East Devon are warned to be vigilant following reports of bogus callers claiming to be fire safety officers.

Sidmouth’s police sergeant urged residents to be wary of any unexpected door knockers and advised people to lock their homes, put a chain across where possible and not to let any unidentified individuals inside.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a man and woman, claiming to be officers, canvassing addresses and asking for access to carry out home safety checks.

It confirmed the people in question were not official personnel.

A spokesman service for the said while it does have officers that carry out this service, they always carry official identification and will not ask for payment.

Sergeant Andy Squires of Sidmouth’s neighbourhood police team said he has heard reports of the bogus callers, but has not been made aware of any specific incidents in the town.

He added: “Be wary of unexpected callers and make sure you see identification. Never let them into your house and, if possible, put the chain across. If in doubt, call to check if the company or organisation does have people going door-to-door in your area.”

Anyone suspicious of unexpected callers is asked to call the police on 101, or in case of an emergency dial 999.
