A woman born and bred in Exmouth has celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by friends and family.

Vera Sedgemore, of Carberry Avenue, marked the landmark age by attending her granddaughter Claire’s wedding day, before being visited by more than 50 friends and family two days later.

She danced with the groom, Mark Emmins, to a song called Deep Purple, at the wedding reception at Devoncourt Hotel.

Vera also received a card from the Queen, which she admitted was ‘overwhelming’.

She said: “It was lovely to see all my friends and family.”

Vera said the secret to a long life was to keep active and stay fit.

She grew up at a dairy in Church Road before the family moved to take over a pub in Clarence Road, which has since become flats.

Her father, James Stadling, was an engineer at the pumping station in the town.

She went to school in a building now used as the town’s library, before moving onto a girls’ school, which has since become Exeter Road Primary School.

Vera went into needle work after leaving school, before going on to spend 25 years at Thomas Tucker doing upholstery and tailoring.

“I was very good at needle work. I won a competition for Devon for it, so I was put into work at a company in Bicton Street,” said Vera.

“It breaks my heart to see what Thomas Tucker has become.”

She was a keen a cyclist and it was as a member of the Exmouth Wheelers that she met her husband, Percy.

During one race, he had fallen off into some bushes – Vera was there to help him up.

The couple got married in 1939 and had two daughters, Patricia Syder and Alison Sykes.

She also has three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She has lived in Carberry Avenue for 18 years and currently shares her home with her daughter, Alison.
