Up to 50 new trees have been planted at the former Dennesdene Farm.

Dozens of volunteers turned out last weekend to help environmental campaign group Transition Town Exmouth plant the trees.

The group has been working with East Devon District Council at the Marley Road site.

They planted nearly 50 trees in an area just off Pound Lane, opposite Greenfingers Garden Centre.

The site was approved by Mark Pollard, parks development officer for East Devon District Council.

He said: “We were pleased that TTE approached us with their initiative. The land, adopted by East Devon District Council (EDDC) as a public space to go with housing development, has a stream running through it, so, obviously, trees will go well there.

“Small trees need to be planted in fairly protected conditions. Realistically, you have to expect a 50 per cent failure rate, but with nearly 50, there are a lot of them, so even if you lose half, there should be a lot left.”

TTE’s Elinor Scott said: “We’re delighted that EDDC approved some land for us.

“Greenfingers Garden Centre kindly sponsored our tree-planting event, and provided free soup!”
