AN Exmouth pensioner, who battled to save the level of care his bedridden 99-year-old mother receives, has won his fight to retain her healthcare funding.Muriel Prescott, a resident of Halsdown Nursing Home, faced being moved from her nursing home when the Devon Primary Care Trust (PCT) announced she was no longer eligible to receive funds to pay for her round-the-clock nursing care.Muriel's son, Robert, 72, took on the PCT after his family was told it would have to find 2,700 a month to pay for Mrs Prescott's care.Last week Mr Prescott, of Ivydale, received a phone call telling him the funding would not be withdrawn, and his mother would retain her current level of care. The PCT is currently under investigation by the South West Strategic Health Authority (SHA) after Mrs Prescott's case came to light.Mr Prescott said he could not understand the PCT's decision to withdraw funds because his mother's condition had worsened in the last two years - requiring higher levels of care.He said his bedridden mother needed turning every two hours to prevent bed sores, suffered from dementia and was unable to feed herself. Mr Prescott said: "If the funding had been withdrawn, the family would have had to find the money. Once the money ran out my mum would probably have been moved to an inferior place, which would have been difficult for her. I think it's totally inhumane. "To have the funding is such a relief. I can't explain it."I am glad the PCT is under investigation. Hopefully they will clean their act up."Yvonne Le Brun, Devon PCT continuing care manager, said: "A decision to fund continuing healthcare for Mrs Prescott was made following a more detailed analysis of her needs."Mrs Prescott's family was informed verbally of the decision yesterday and will receive written confirmation shortly. We appreciate this has been a difficult time for Mrs Prescott and her family and we are pleased to have been able to bring the matter to a successful conclusion.
