US author Michael Dahl turned up at Marpool Primary School in Exmouth and made the day of 10-year-old fan Holli Williams.
Michael, from Minnesota, has written more than 100 books for children and young adults.
He flew into London on Sunday and arrived at the school on Tuesday (November 3) - all because Holli wrote him a letter.
Holli, who was not keen on books, became hooked on Michael’s novels after reading them in the school library.
She was presented with a signed set of the Library of Doom books by Michael.
The writer and his Raintree Publishing team arrived at the school at 11.30am and had lunch with staff.
The children were then given a talk by Helen Freeman from Raintree about the importance of reading and to find out if they had read Michael’s books.
Mrs Freeman then said the writer simply couldn’t resist coming over from America to meet Holli and his other young fans.
Michael then walked in and gave a talk for at least an hour to encourage the children to take up reading.
He also took part in a question and answer session before travelling back to his base in Oxford where he is spending the week.
