Exmouth residents are outraged after newly-planted trees in the town centre were destroyed at the weekend.

The trees were put in place by Devon County Council (DCC) contractors near the subway at The Strand.

Vandals chopped the trees down around three feet from the base, meaning Exmouth in Bloom, which is in charge of maintaining the site, will have to restore the plot.

Councillor Pat Graham, who is a member of the volunteer group, said the act of vandalism was ‘heartbreaking’.

She said: “A lot of money was spent on that and I was beginning to think things were all right in the town. We don’t get much vandalism in Exmouth - we just have to keep going.”

Another resident of the town, Sue Legge, 62, was also angry about the damage done.

She said: “A lot of people have given their time to make this area nice - I am so cross about it.”

“I just think it’s appalling for this to happen - what pleasure do they get from it?”
