A 54-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after an overnight fire in Exmouth.

Police have confirmed the woman, from Exmouth, is currently in custody in Exeter.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at a flat in Imperial Road at 3.08am.

The alarm had been raised by a male occupant of the flat, who reported a fire and that a fellow female occupant was still inside.

Firefighters rescued the woman within minutes and set to work extinguishing the fire.

Crews used four breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one safety jet to extinguish the fire, and a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the smoke.

An ambulance attended the scene and reported that no-one was injured or had to be taken to hospital.
