A BRIXINGTON pensioner believes she has solved the mystery of the unidentified flying objects over Exmouth.

A video showing mystery sliver objects hovering in the sky over Sandy Bay beach was recently filmed from Devon Cliffs Holiday Park and the footage was posted on internet site You Tube.

The rumour mill went into overdrive once UFO spotters got hold of the footage and since then speculation has been rife that Exmouth had become a hot-spot for alien aircraft.

This week Hazel Shelston, 73, from Fraser Road, quashed claims the silver diamond-shaped disk was a visiting UFO, saying the mystery shapes were nothing more than Chinese lanterns.

Hazel said she too had spotted the silver shape and was convinced the sighting was extra terrestrial. It was when she and her friend, Jean Gooding, from Woodbury, drove to Orcombe Point and found a wedding party letting off the lanterns that they realised their strange sighting had been the luminous lanterns hovering in the air.

Hazel stopped and spoke to the group, who were releasing the lit lanterns into the sky to celebrate their friends' wedding being held in Thailand.

Hazel said: "If we hadn't driven along we would have spent the rest of our lives saying we had seen a UFO.

"It was more exciting to say that and we wish we hadn't driven up there really.

"My friend and I go and sit on the seafront and watch the world go by.

"We were there for about 15 minutes and saw the lights in the sky and thought it was a UFO. When we went along to the end and saw they had lanterns and sparklers, we were very disappointed really. We thought it had been UFOs."

The video footage, lasting more than three minutes, shows a silver-white diamond shape hovering in the clear sky above the water.

When the camera operator, known only as Steveu4, zooms in on the object it appears to be a perfect diamond shape.

Also visible are several darker, cylindrical, objects, which are harder to pick out.

Experts pointed the finger at nearby planets, aeroplanes and rotor kites as an explanation to the sighting.
