I appreciate these UFO stories make easy copy, but a little more investigation into these sightings would not go amiss.
Was Mr March's sighting by any chance on August 12? That sounds like a very good description of one of the Perseid meteors.
As to sky lanterns - whatever people imagine they ought to look like - these account for the majority of sightings these days, and a little research can often track them to local festivals.
