I really must congratulate Roy Pryke, chairman of Exmouth Community Association (ECA), once again raises concerns (Letters, Journal, December 3) about Devon County Council's (DCC) proposals for routing traffic when The Strand has been pedestrianised.

He points out that the proposed arrangements may cause considerable congestion outside the Savoy cinema, when buses stop to set down or pick up passengers.

The Exmouth Residents' Association (ERA) is also worried about the viability of the new traffic scheme here and believes that it is not only unworkable, but may prove dangerous, as pedestrians try to cross the busy road. We have written to your paper expressing our reservations about this development on a number of occasions over the last year.

We have also recently produced an update to the original traffic report, produced jointly with the ECA. This new report accepts that the decision to allow traffic in Rolle Street is now irrevocable but suggests some simple steps which would alleviate the problems that might arise.

Understandably, our two solutions differ. ERA's suggestions are based on the original joint report and would, therefore, be a step towards an improved traffic system around the town centre. By thinking outside The 'Strand box' our solution does not eat into the remaining pedestrian space in The Strand. (More detailed information about our proposals is available on our website at www.exmouthresidents.co.uk/traffic)

The point is that both of the organisations that have investigated traffic flows around the town are united in raising concerns about the proposed scheme. Is it not time to take heed?

So, what about it councillors? Are you prepared to spend a little time listening and discussing what we (ERA and the ECA) feel should be done to avoid future problems on this stretch of roadway?

It will be much cheaper to find a solution now before work starts on The Strand, next year.
