Town’s police station to close to save cash

Budleigh Salterton Police Station is to be closed, the force has said.
A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said the decision to close the facility, in Fore Street, had been taken as part of a force-wide programme to review its buildings, and that the way the town was policed would not be affected. He said: “There is a force rationalisation programme, which has been going on for the last four years.
“There has been a decision to close Budleigh Salterton Police Station.
“Police officers haven’t been based in that building for some time, and a policing presence will continue as it has done recently.
“There will still be a Neighbourhood Policing Team [for Budleigh].”
The spokesman said that the savings made at Budleigh, where the station is leased, would help keep officers on the beat, as the force dealt with a reduced budget.
He said: “The police are looking to make savings across the board. The more savings we can make through our estates, the fewer police officers we will lose.”
The force is set to discuss the plans with Budleigh Salterton Town Council later this month.
