Paul Strange (letters, February 19) has got it absolutely right - apart from his desire to see the back of Asda, that is! Every Sunday, I walk along Rolle Road and down Rolle Street to buy a paper. Invariably, I follow a trail of plastic forks, polystyrene trays, cans, broken bottles, discarded "food" and sometimes worse. The stretch of pavement around the Natwest Bank is disgusting. Visitors to Exmouth have to stand here to catch buses and have to share the little space available with three huge refuse bins, the buckets and spades etc that spill onto the pavement and, at the same time, try to avoid passers by and all kinds of unpleasantries which may be lying on the pavement under their feet. The council, in its wisdom, saw fit last year to grant a licence for a pole dancing club just off The Strand and a very short distance from an attractive building providing sheltered accommodation for the elderly - shame on the council, what are they thinking of? The right decision would have been to demolish the club because it is an eyesore. Two or three months ago, while walking past another nightclub in Victoria Road, just a stone's throw from The Strand, my wife and I had to step into the road in order to avoid a large pool of blood on the pavement. Yet another 'drinking den'-type pub now claims to be open until 2am.Exmouth has so much going for it. It occupies an enviable site in a beautiful part of the country as well as having a fine historical heritage, beautifully tended gardens, a lovely stretch of beach (spoilt by the hundreds of dogs that run all over it) and good communications. Why does the town feel it has to appeal to clubbers, binge drinkers, fast food addicts and yobs in general? They bring nothing of value to the town and are mainly responsible for its filthy state. For the council to even contemplate spending huge sums of money doing up The Strand before first getting rid of the fast food outlets and the ghastly nightclubs that surround it would be a criminal waste of taxpayers' money. Torquay became the absolute pits some years ago because of its love affair with fast food joints and nightclubs and, sadly, Exmouth is rapidly joining it. Do the councillors who are thinking of spending the money never take a look around the town and see what the problems are?David Baldwin,(via email).
