THINGS moved faster than expected for Exmouth reptile enthusiast Richard Acca when he bought in two giant tortoises from Germany.

THINGS moved faster than expected for Exmouth reptile enthusiast Richard Acca when he bought in two giant tortoises from Germany.

Within days of the arrival of two giant Ethiopian leopard tortoises at his reptile centre in Leslie Road, Exmouth, he discovered one of the animals was pregnant.

Richard arrived at work last week to find an egg had been laid by one of the enormous creatures.

"It was a very pleasant surprise," said Richard. "We had no idea she was pregnant, and we don't know how many more she will lay and how long it will take."

Whatever the outcome, it will take rather a long time before they reach the size of their mother. The two tortoises measure 60cms by 38cms and are believed to be around 30 years old.

Richard bought the tortoises from a reptile show in Germany.

They have been raised by a specialist breeder in Spain.

The tortoises are relatively rare, which means they attract a price tag of around £2,500 each.

The tortoises are still growing and could reach double their present size.

Information about the tortoises is available on the Exmouth Reptiles website, www.exmouthreptiles.co.uk
