Men in Topsham finally have a barber’s shop in town after an Exmouth woman opened for business on Fore Street last week.
Vicky Cunningham, 34, has opened next door to the old Topsham Hairdressers shop on January 19 - and business has started well.
She said: “I’ve been really pleasantly surprised by how busy I have been and I’ve had lots of positive feedback.
“It feels so comfortable, it’s like I’ve been here forever.”
The former teaching assistant noticed the shop was empty on one of her runs in October 2014 and popped into the estate agents to ask about it.
She then noticed the town did not have a barber’s and decided it would be perfect location for a ‘shabby-chic’ traditional shop.
“I couldn’t believe it, I think a nice barber is better for men – it fits in with their lifestyle,” said Vicky.
Since she moved with her husband and her two children from Cardiff six years ago, Vicky has worked at The Barbers in Guildhall, Exeter, either side of a short stint as a teaching assistant.
She worked at the Exeter barber’s for six months when she first moved to Exmouth and for three months before it closed in December 2014.
She took a career break to take a job helping at a pre-school to allow her to spend more time with her family.
Vicky said: “I think it takes to do something different to realise what you’re good at.”
She has been cutting hair, on and off, since she was 16 and feels the time was right to go it alone.
Vicky said: “I have thought about it a lot but never done anything about it.
“My two children are eight and six so it just makes sense to do it now.”
