TOPSHAM'S outdoor swimming pool has been saved thanks to volunteers rallying to support it through the summer months. The Topsham pool was closed for its annual splash on New Year's Day for the first time in its history because of a lack of volunteers, disappointing the hundreds of children who look forward to the event. This month's annual meeting was attended by nearly 60 local residents who were concerned about the pool's future and 28 people have already committed to volunteering.Colin Long, chairman of the Topsham Pool Association, said: "Our committee members' average age is 65 and we really needed to rejuvenate and boost our volunteer numbers. "The meeting was very successful and we will now do the best we can. "The most important contact and support was from the local mother and toddler group. They obviously have young children who use the pool and have said they will volunteer as they would hate to see it close."The swimming bath is entirely run by volunteers and had its first Splash Day in the millennium. It costs £240 per day to run the pool and the only people employed are the lifeguards, although the committee are in desperate need of voluntary help from people with engineering and electrical experience for maintenance. The pool will open to the public on May 17 and remain open throughout the summer season.
