Topsham man to face retrial in axe attack case

A Topsham man who attacked his lodger with an axe is to face a retrial after a jury were unable to reach a verdict on a charge of attempted murder.

Andrew Barnes has admitted causing grievous bodily harm to victim Luke Down in the attack at his flat in Altamira last September, but denies attempting to kill him.

Barnes, 61, will face a retrial after a jury at Exeter Crown Court were unable to reach a verdict on the more serious charge of attempted murder.

The jury were discharged after three days of deliberations.

The retrial is scheduled for May 22.

Barnes was remanded in custody.
