A 60-year-old Topsham man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of his lodger.

Andrew Richard Barnes, of Altamira, is accused of attempting to murder 29-year-old Luke Down on Monday night at his home.

He appeared via video link at Exeter Magistrates’ Court this morning (Wednesday) and was remanded in custody. Prosecutor Jo Clark said Mr Down was in intensive care in hospital after suffering serious head injuries, which led to nine hours of surgery.

Barnes will appear at Exeter Crown Court on October 6.
