When fire crews from Topsham and Cullompton arrived on the northbound carriageway between Pearces Hill and Sandygate, they found everyone was clear of the vehicles.
The firefighters made the area and vehicles safe before leaving the incident in the hands of the police and paramedics.
An hour later the Topsham and Cullompton crews were called to the southbound junction between Cullompton and Sowton after a collision involving one vehicle.
The fire crews awaited recovery of the vehicle before leaving the incident in the hands of the police and ambulance service.
