ONE of the most influential Conservative politicians' in the country, East Devon's Giles Chichester, has called on the Government to drop VAT on energy efficient buildings to guide the European Union through this economic crisis.

Mr Chichester, who lives in West Hill, is the Euro-MP for the region, and the chairman of the EU's powerful energy committee.

He said: "Allowing lower VAT for improvements in the efficiency of buildings and launching an information campaign to encourage a change in people's behaviour are two specific ways to help.

"It seems to me that there will never be a better time to set up a group of wise men and women to reflect on the challenge we face and come up with solutions beyond the short term remedy of throwing money at tax giveaways and I hope Council and Commission will give this idea a fair wind.
