TIC cafe supported by planners

Plans to open a café at the former Tourist Information Centre in the Manor Gardens have been recommended for approval by district planning officers.

The plan will be considered by councillors at East Devon District Council’s development management committee meeting, next Tuesday, at the Knowle, in Sidmouth.

In a report for that meeting, officers say the café scheme, which would see a service hatch and awnings fitted to the building, should go ahead.

They said: “It is considered that this proposal would add vitality and be complementary to a use that would be compatible with the recreational area in which it is set.

“It would offer a facility that would encourage people to travel to the gardens and then on to the beach, or vice versa to the town.”

The café plan follows the closure of the former TIC in 2011, with the district council-owned building unused since then. Exmouth Town Council has already backed the plan.

An application to sell alcohol at the café, which was opposed by town councillors last week, will be considered separately at a later date.
