MEMBERS and staff from Devon County Council will on Monday pay special tribute to Exeter City FC at a reception to celebrate the team's promotion to the football league.

Council chairman Cllr John Rawlinson will welcome players and staff from the club, known as the 'Pride of Devon' at the reception hosted at County Hall in Exeter, where council Leader Brian Greenslade will also announce a three-year sponsorship proposal to engage young people in local communities in sport.

Councillor Rawlinson said: "On behalf of Devon County Council, I would like to congratulate the club on its promotion - a fantastic achievement and one that is richly deserved.

"The Grecians' recent signing of Marcus Stewart shows the club's ambition for the coming season, and I would like to wish them every success for their league games - I hope they continue to go from strength to strength."

Said Councillor Greenslade: "The club has shown remarkable fortitude through fluctuating fortunes, and after five years out, has now regained its rightful place back in the football league.

"This achievement is testament to the strength of support for the Grecians, and to the determination of the players and club staff who have all worked so hard to move the club forward.

"But their achievements don't just stop at matches: The club has been actively involved in local communities, working with children to get them involved in sport and improve their skills. This initiative not only encourages children to get active and stay healthy; it provides them with valuable skills. We are pleased to be adding our support to this programme and will be announcing the details at our reception on Monday."

Exeter City FC's director of operations, Frances Farley, said: "We are very grateful that Devon County Council is holding this reception in our honour as recognition of the achievements of Paul Tisdale and his team. Everyone at Exeter City is looking forward to playing league football once again and we hope that the people of Devon will get behind the team and show continuing support.

"We are proud to call ourselves a community club and our Football in the Community team has a number of excellent initiatives which allow children to engage in sport and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

"We have worked closely with officers at Devon County Council before and are delighted that this new partnership arrangement will enable our coaches to implement a scheme which will give more young people the opportunity to participate in sport.
