An application to transform an iconic town centre building into a restaurant and flats has been given the green light.

District council planners have approved the plan for the former Thomas Tucker building at 36 to 37 The Strand, which had previously been labelled as ‘an eyesore’.

The existing shop, which has been closed for 10 years, will be turned into a restaurant and five flats will be built on the first and second floors.

The adjacent showroom will also be converted into two flats with parking below.
