An Exmouth eatery is tackling beach litter by offering free coffee to customers willing to pick up rubbish from the town’s beaches.

People popping into The Point Bar & Grill, on Pilot Wharf, can currently enjoy a free coffee – that is, if they are willing to brave a mini beach clean.

Manager Luke Healey said he wanted to ensure the business was doing its bit to protect the environment and tackle the widespread problem of beach litter.

“We are lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world and if we all do our little bit then we can reduce it,” he said.

The only requirement for being served your free coffee, is to pick up a yellow bucket from the bar, fill it with litter (from the beach!) and bring it back for staff to dispose of.

Although Luke admitted there was ‘an element of advertising’ behind the idea, he said it was by no means the main motivation.

He said: “It’s just the right thing to do isn’t it? If one person comes in and cleans the beach and has a cup of coffee, it’s done what it needed to do – and it’s got people talking.”

Luke advertised the offer on the bar’s Facebook page and since then his post has received hundreds of positive reactions and shares.

One person commented: “Well done for taking the initiative. Maybe more businesses in Exmouth will follow your good example.”

And the litter-picking idea is part of a longer-term eco friendly plan for the bar and grill.

Luke said: “I intend on doing it for as long as it works. If I’m cleaning the beach every week then what a wonderful thing to do.

“All our waste is moving towards zero landfill soon, in line with all our small efforts to do better.”

But The Point is not the only Exmouth business introducing initiatives with an environmental focus.

Last week restaurant Rockfish, on Pier Head, also announced on social media the installation of a free drinking water tap, aiming to ‘reduce the use of non-recyclable plastics’.

In the post, which also received hundreds of positive reactions and shares, the establishment said it was proud to have joined the #RefillDevon campaign, providing ‘free tap water to all’.
