A supermarket giant has quashed rumours that it is looking to use part of Budleigh's only remaining bank as part of proposals to move into the town.

Rumours circulated this week that representatives from Tesco were looking at the Lloyds Bank building. Tesco announced recently that it is moving forward with plans to move into the former SM Prior and Sons building in Fore Street.

The company revived proposals to create a Tesco Express in Budleigh last month, after previously cancelling the scheme in 2015.

Lloyds is currently Budleigh’s only bank following the closures of NatWest and Barclays.

A Tesco spokesman denied that it is looking at the bank nextdoor, but did say that representatives from the company had been in Budleigh.

The spokesman said: “We are keen to open a new Tesco Express store to serve local residents in Budleigh Salterton and are undertaking some surveying work at the site as we work towards that end.”
