I read with interest your article on speeding traffic in The Avenues (Journal, April 30). As a resident of Douglas Avenue, I am not at all surprised at the volume of speeding traffic. In September 2006, Devon County Council undertook a speed survey, placing radar equipment at the junction of Merrion Avenue and Douglas Avenue. During a nine-day period (outside of the school holiday period), almost 21,000 vehicles were recorded on Douglas Avenue. Of these, 43% exceeded the speed limit. The council seemed to think the speeding drivers were visitors - not so. It is not just a problem with 'boy racers', it is local taxis, delivery vans and other local motorists. There seems to be a particular problem on the stretch of road between Merrion Avenue and Mayfield Drive as the road is straight with little parked traffic. I have, on many occasions, needed to help an elderly person cross the road. The problem seems to be two-fold - safety with speed and volume and also environmental - with noise and pollution. I just hope a solution is found before someone is seriously injured.Sandi Forte,(via email).
