A FREE orienteering event is taking place in Exeter today at Riverside Valley Park.

People will be able to explore Exeter's largest valley park using map-reading and navigation skills.

Orienteering is a sport where participants aim to find their way around a countryside course, with checkpoints, in as short a time as possible.

There will be an introductory talk and guidance from Exeter City Council's countryside rangers and a map provided by Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre

A city council spokesperson said: "Riverside Valley Park is an ideal place for beginners to learn orienteering skills as there are courses for different abilities, plenty of landmarks and the terrain is fairly flat.

"This free event is open to everyone and fitness levels are not important. This is not a competition, the aim is for people to have fun and adventure."

Anyone wishing to take part can meet up at 10.30am on Sunday 20 July outside Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre on Haven Road (about 400m walk from Exeter Quay).
