THE quality of flowers and vegetables on display at Newton Poppleford's annual flower show last Saturday defied weeks of bad weather.Gardeners from Sidmouth to Tipton St John turned out for the event at Newton Poppleford Village Hall on Station Road on July 12. Sixteen trophies in both flower and vegetable growing categories were handed out.Colin Campbell, Secretary of Newton Poppleford Garden Club, said that while recent high winds and rain had affected entry numbers, the event still proved a great success.Mr Campbell said: "The judges observed that, despite the bad weather, we had some very good entries and while entry numbers were down the quality went up."The gardening club also insisted the poor weather had failed to dampen their spirits.Mr Campbell said: "We've had three weeks of north east winds which it makes gardening very difficult. We'll definitely be back next year, the judges and hall are already booked!
