FACED with another summer of kids on corners complaining of nothing to do, Exmouth Police has set itself a goal to keep kids active on the football pitch.

With school out and some youth clubs also taking a summer break, officers will round up youngsters for a free football day at Exmouth Rugby Club, on Monday August 11.

Exmouth's neighbourhood beat team dreamt up the 6-a-side tournament to continue their community policing drive.

A recent community day with Littleham residents saw police ask youngsters what they needed. A lack of activities saw police provide goalposts in The Crescent two weeks ago, and have now set up their tournament for the whole of Exmouth.

Organiser PC Sallyanne Southern said: "We have been good at listening to the adults, but not so much the youngsters. They want something to do and somewhere to play, and we are hearing that across Exmouth and the rural areas."

Neighbourhood team leader Sergeant Nick Southern added: "I don't know why but a lot of activities close in summer. It is also a shame that we have facilities like the playing fields at Rolle which will sit unused.

"We have been assured they will not be built on, but for now we are doing what we can to keep kids occupied without having to put their hands in their pocket."

Police thanked Exmouth RFC for the loan of the ground, plus sponsors Tesco - who will provide a free barbecue. Local businesses Game, Tony Pryce Sports, Halfords, Blockbuster, Thorntons, Budgens and Exeter City FC all donated prizes.

Youngsters aged 11 to 17 are invited to form a 6-a-side team, registering at Exmouth Police Station, for the tournament starting 10am, Monday August 11, at the Rugby Club ground in Imperial Road.
