SOLD out stalls and wagging chins marked a huge success for the inaugural Budleigh Salterton farmers' market.Hundreds of customers flocked to the Brook Road car park last Friday to purchase fine, locally sourced produce. The market, officially opened by the Bishop of Exeter, brought the community out in force - market organisers are already saying a bigger site may have to be found.Though a minority of traders had opposed the idea during two years of planning, some ended up trading outside their stores on the day. Organisers say the event will boost the town economy.Market working group leader Malcolm Florey said: "We had an excellent day and an excellent start. There was a great atmosphere."We wanted a site as close to the town centre as possible, and there was evidence that people who came to the market were then going off to shop in town."We already have a waiting list for traders, and we can only accommodate 15 or so in the Brook Road car park, so we may have to explore other sites."Hundreds of residents and visitors went to purchase Devon foods. Budleigh Mayor John Shiel joined the Right Reverend Michael Langrish to speak at the opening. He said later: "I think everybody did extremely well. The market ended up as a great meeting place for the town, people who may not see each other for a time all ended up there."The market will be held between 9am and 1pm on the final Friday of every month - the next event on April 25.
