Exeter University students are busy raising funds for Exmouth RNLI with a variety of fundraisers.

The students plan to set up a fundraising branch on campus, while two other groups have already organised events at the end of the month to raise funds for the launch and recovery equipment for the new lifeboat in 2014.

It is hoped that once set up, the branch can hold events of its own, as well as involving lecturers and other university staff in their efforts to raise cash.

Members of sports societies and drama groups have registered an interest in organising society-based events that would raise money for the life-saving charity.

The students hope they can make a ‘significant contribution’ to Exmouth’s launch and recovery vehicle appeal.

Frances Warren, RNLI community fundraising manager for the South West, said: “We are delighted students at Exeter University are keen to get involved with fundraising for the RNLI and develop links with the local lifeboat station at Exmouth.

“A number of students at this university have been involved with the RNLI through summer jobs and it is wonderful they are keen to continue to support us in this way.

“The group at Exeter have some exciting plans for events over the next year.”

A group of six final year drama students have based their final course module around the RNLI life-saving volunteers’ roles.

With the help of workshops run in conjunction with Exe Sailing Club, the group researched the ‘physical and mental constraints’ RNLI crewmembers experience.

The students’ performance will be held on March 22 at 5pm on Exmouth beach, in front of the Harbour View café, followed by a fundraising party at Coast bowling alley. Entry is free. There will be a bucket collection for donations.

Local schools will be exhibiting work in celebration of the RNLI.

A bucket collection will also be held on March 24, when the university’s 1st hockey team plays a varsity match against the University of Cardiff and UWIC at 2pm at Exeter’s Streatham campus.

There will also be the chance to buy RNLI merchandise.
