A stone commemorating a Victoria Cross winner from Exmouth is to be installed on the town's war memorial.

The Victoria Cross Commemorative Paving Stone will reference Lieutenant Richard Douglas Sandford, who was awarded the Victoria Cross on 22 April 1918. Planning permission for the stone was granted at Tuesday’s meeting of East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) development management committee.

EDDC development manager Chris Rose said: “An objection was received that the person wasn’t born in Exmouth and this should be provided in Exeter, but despite that the government have confirmed the lieutenant did live in Exmouth for a while and on that basis they are happy to fund the stone.”

Planning documents said archive newspaper clippings, including some from the Journal, had been used to prove that Lieutenant Sandford had been an Exmouth resident.
