Not many good things have happened as a result of the current recession. However, the news that Asda has pulled out of the proposed development on the banks of the River Exe is one. Councillor Ray Franklin (elected to represent Budleigh Salterton) states this is 'deeply disappointing'. Would he hold the same view if such a development had been planned on the banks of the River Otter in Budleigh Salterton? There is a limit to what Exmothians are prepared to sacrifice to obtain new community facilities.The message to our elected representatives is clear. We do not want any more sham consultations, but we expect you to engage in sensitive planning for this site. This should include the provision of a modern public transport interchange, cycle path and bird watching facilities, a tourist information office, which visitors can actually find easily on arrival, and the provision of seating for the quiet enjoyment of the wonderful views.Currently, there is a lot of money on the table to make improvements to The Strand area, but I believe this should now be diverted to the estuaryside and its transport facilities, which are currently a disgraceful, shabby welcome to our town.Jean Pettit,51 Victoria Road, Exmouth.
