Sonic booms’ a mystery

For a number of weeks/ months, we have experienced a frequent sonic boom (usually in the early evening) that lasts a few seconds, causes a sound like that of furniture falling and shakes the house.

For a number of weeks/ months, we have experienced a frequent 'sonic boom' (usually in the early evening) that lasts a few seconds, causes a sound like that of furniture falling and shakes the house.

We live near to the croquet ground at Budleigh Salterton and - apart from the over enthusiastic play of members - have decided it is more likely to be caused by or emanating from the oil tankers in the bay.

We would be very interested to discover if any other residents have experienced this and also if any one can provide an explanation - other than my speculation.
