A BRIXINGTON slimming group is raising cash for injured troops and has been given more than 40 prizes by local people towards its charity fundraiser next month.

Brixington Slimming World is holding a charity auction at the Blackmore Theatre in aid of Help for Heroes at 7pm on May 21.

Proceeds will help build a personnel recovery centre, similar to Headley Court, just outside Plymouth.

So far, more than 40 items have been donated by people in Exmouth, Budleigh and Topsham, including a trip in a glider, two 30-minute flights in a light aircraft, a power-kiting course, silver jewellery, framed artwork and family tickets to the Eden Project and Bicton Park.

Other prizes include an overnight stay with a three-course, a la carte dinner and breakfast at Thelbridge Cross Inn, a chiminea from Kings Garden Centre, and vouchers for hair and beauty treatments, restaurant meals and Stuart Line cruises.

Group leader India Laurence said: “When members were visited by David Gammell, South West representative of the charity Help for Heroes, they were so moved by the sterling work the charity does in aiding injured servicemen and women that they decided to do something about it.”

Mayor Darryl Nicholas is set to open the fundraising event, which will kick off with a short comic play by the Exmouth Players.

Tickets are 2, available on the door on the night.
